Partakers of a Heavenly Calling

                                                                                           Hebrews 3

Introduction

The book of Hebrews was written to both Jewish believers and Jews who had not fully committed themselves to Christ. It is an apologetic (apologético) or defense (defense) of who Christ is and what He did and does for us.

It applies to:

believers,

partially committed believers, and

non-believers.

Throughout the book/letter the author makes comparisons between:

New

The good

The best

The letter is an exhortation and encouragement to the believers, and evidence to non-believers exactly who Christ is and what He did for us. Therefore, this letter applies to everyone who will listen, believers and non-believers.

How I Study

When I am studying the Bible and preparing to teach I do it inductively (observe, interpret, and apply). One of the things that I do that helps my understanding is to make charts and lists and look for key words.

Let me encourage you to make charts and tables when you are taking notes in your personal study, or after you have heard Bible teaching. I helps me to clarify in my mind what has been said and taught.

- the message of salvation for those who believe HIm

Jews and Gentiles alike are the recipients (partakers) of this message.

This message is for us

3:1

High Priest of our confession

Since His death, resurrection and ascension He is now seated at God’s right hand to intercede for us

1 John 1:9 – If we confess our sins he is faithful and just to forgive us our sins and cleanse us from all unrighteousness.

We can go directly to Christ our Intercessor and High Priest

We need no other intermediary

3:2

He is worthy of consideration because of His faithfulness

Jesus faithfully surrendered His will to His Father

God appointed Him as The Apostle and High Priest.

(we will see much more in Hebrews about Christ our High Priest and also the priesthood of the believer.)

Moses is an earthly example of faithfulness

Moses was appointed as a:

- messenger (apostle) to Israel

- leader of Israel

- He was a Levite (from the tribe of priests)

- in Moses’ house or household, Aaron, Moses’ oldest brother was appointed the first high priest for Israel

3:3-4

Read verses 3-4Worthy of more glory than Moses

He who built the house has more honor than the house. For every house is built by someone, but He who builds all things is God.

Moses’ house or household = nation of IsraelHe did NOT build it BUT,

he was responsible for leading it and shepherding it.

Jesus’ house/household = disciples, followers, believers, the church – you and meWe are partakers in His household (the church)

3:5

Moses appointed as a servant inHis (God’s) house

For a testimony (as a messenger or apostle),

to give proof,

to declare or make known

3:5 those things which would be spoken afterward

Moses was appointed to be the messenger of the Law to Israel,

The Law described in detail what was required of Israel

It described the blessing for obedience, but also the

Consequences of disobedience.

He was also to be the one to lead the nation into the promised land, the land of rest, the land flowing with “milk and honey”

He listened to God and was called to lead Israel.

He faithfully served in this role.

3:6

Christ as Son appointed over His house

He called 12 Apostles to equip to establish His church after His death and resurrection.

They would be the ones to communicate the gospel to the early church

Now we have this responsibility to lead, guide, edify, teach …. His church Faithful servant leadership is necessary in the church

If you have godly leadership in your church (in your house) you must be faithful to the leaders God has put over you.

Paul said in 1 Cor 11:1 — Follow my example; as I follow the example of Christ

Just as Moses and Christ were faithful to their calling in the houses that God put them in

Each one of us needs to be faithful to the church bodies God puts us in,

And

We must be faithful to the leadership that God places over us.

V 6 – We are of (members or sharers or partakers) of His house

IF HOLD FAST …. FIRMLY TO THE END

- hold fast the confidence of our hope, and

- rejoice in this hope

firmly to the end (and again in vs 14)

In the letters to the 7 churches in Rev 2 and 3, each letter ends with

To he who overcomes : There are blessings &rewards.

3:3-6

Each one of us are members of a household, and leaders of a household

SINGLE

MARRIED

FAMILY

CHURCH LEADERS / PASTORS
MINISTRIES

MISSIONARIES

Part of the heavenly (holy calling) from verse 1 is to be servants (like Christ modeled) in our households.

We need to be apostles – messengers of God’s Word in our households

We need to be leading those God puts under us (including ourselves) in His ways.

READ

Something happened in the wilderness, with those God was leading thru Moses: Read Numbers 20:2-13

2 There was no water for the congregation, and they assembled themselves against Moses and Aaron. 3 The people thus contended with Moses and spoke, saying, “If only we had perished when our brothers perished before the LORD! 4 Why then have you brought the LORD’S assembly into this wilderness, for us and our beasts to die here? 5 Why have you made us come up from Egypt, to bring us in to this wretched place? It is not a place of grain or figs or vines or pomegranates, nor is there water to drink.” 6 Then Moses and Aaron came in from the presence of the assembly to the doorway of the tent of meeting and fell on their faces. Then the glory of the LORD appeared to them; 7 and the LORD spoke to Moses, saying,

The Water of Meribah

8 “Take the rod; and you and your brother Aaron assemble the congregation and speak to the rock before their eyes, that it may yield its water. You shall thus bring forth water for them out of the rock and let the congregation and their beasts drink.”

9 So Moses took the rod from before the LORD, just as He had commanded him; 10 and Moses and Aaron gathered the assembly before the rock. And he said to them, “Listen now, you rebels; shall we bring forth water for you out of this rock?” 11 Then Moses lifted up his hand and struck the rock twice with his rod; and water came forth abundantly, and the congregation and their beasts drank. 12 But the LORD said to Moses and Aaron, “Because you have not believed Me, to treat Me as holy in the sight of the sons of Israel, therefore you shall not bring this assembly into the land which I have given them.” 13 Those were the waters of Meribah, because the sons of Israel contended with the LORD, and He proved Himself holy among them.

Exodus 17:1-7 (Verse 7) the people were saying “Is the Lord among us or not” (lack of faith)

Meribah – quarreling (pelear)

Massah – testing (probar, tentar)

APPLICATION

Heavenly Calling

For each of us that has received Christ we have a heavenly calling that includes:

- Being a messenger of God’s word to others

Yourself

Your household – family, friends, those God connects with you

- Serving in your household

Your husband or wife

Your kids

In your church

- Encouraging and Exhorting

Christians who are weak in their faith

Those who do not have their hope fix firmly on the author and finisher of our faith

Non-believers, Those who may have heard, but whose hearts are hardened

Enter into God’s Rest

Maybe you are here this evening and you know that:

- You have – Hardened your heart toward God

- You are disobedient and unbelieving, or

- Undecided – like the Jews – you are stuck in old ways of life, habits, traditions

- Jesus said (Matt 11:28)
28 “Come to Me, all who are weary and heavy-laden, and I will give you rest. 29 Take My yoke upon you and learn from Me, for I am gentle and humble in heart, and YOU WILL FIND REST FOR YOUR SOULS. 30 For My yoke is easy and My burden is light.”

The book of Hebrews gives us many proofs or evidences that should convince us that Jesus Chirst is the Only One Who can give us rest.

IF YOU WANT ENTER INTO THE REST FOR YOUR SOUL TONIGHT

PRAY WITH ME NOW

a) Oración Inicial y Lectura Bíblica a cargo de Marco Antonio Castellanos;
